Martina’s Search

Synopsis
Martina is a argentine widow who has been searching for her grandson for over thirty years—a child born in captivity during the country’s military dictatorship. Martina’s quest becomes even more urgent when she is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Upon discovering that her grandson may be in Brazil, she embarks on a journey where past and present intertwine, turning her search into a battle against forgetting.
“Martina’s Search” was recently voted Best Film by the audience at the 43rd Uruguay International Film Festival. Directed by Márcia Faria and starring Argentine actress Mercedes Morán (“The Motorcycle Diaries”), alongside Brazilian actresses Carla Ribas and Luciana Paes, the film brings to the screen the poignant story of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo—women who have been searching for their grandchildren, born in captivity or kidnapped during Argentina’s military dictatorship, for over four decades. Distributed by Bretz Filmes, the feature will premiere in Brazilian theaters on June 5.
In 2024, ““Martina’s Search” also won Best Film in the Latin American competition at the prestigious 39th Mar del Plata Film Festival in Argentina, following its world premiere at the Rio Film Festival, as part of Première Brasil: New Trends. Later that year, it was also featured in the 48th São Paulo International Film Festival.
The film is a Brazil–Uruguay co-production, with participation from Brazilian companies Kromaki and Ipanema Filmes, and Uruguayan companies Básico and Criatura.
